Tuning guides by engine.

What does a tune actually deliver on your engine, and what does it take? We set it out per engine code: what the engine does from the factory, what Stage 1 and Stage 2 deliver per fuel grade, what to watch out for and what we do with it in our workshop in Elburg.

Every power figure in these guides comes from BMW's own press releases or from bootmod3's published data. We do not invent numbers, and where we cannot back something up we do not write it down.

BMW six-cylinders

S58

The engine in the G80 M3, G82 M4, G87 M2, F97 X3 M and F98 X4 M. Factory output from 460 to 530 hp. Main things to watch: the DME is almost always locked, and the difference between RON95 and RON98 is unusually large on this engine.

B58

The most widely fitted BMW six-cylinder: M140i, M240i, 340i, M340i, 440i, 540i, 640i, 740i, 840i, Z4 M40i, X3 and X4 M40i, X5, X6 and X7 40i, and the Toyota Supra A90. Two generations that respond differently to software, with up to 72 percent more torque in the highest stage.

S55

The engine in the F80 M3, F82 and F83 M4 and the F87 M2 Competition. Plenty to gain with software, but read the chapter on the crank hub before you start adding torque.

Which engines are next

We are expanding this with the engines we carry licences and parts for: N55, S63TU and S63TU4, B48 and B46, and the N63 variants. The VAG engines follow after that. If your engine is missing and you have a question, send us a message.

What you will find in the shop

Every guide links to what you actually need for it: the bootmod3 licences, DME unlocks and flashing cables, and the Eventuri intake systems for that engine.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the power figures come from?

The factory figures come from BMW's own press releases. The stage gains are bootmod3's published data, converted to European fuel: 91 octane corresponds to RON95 and 93 octane to RON98. We do not add anything and we do not estimate.

Why are the gains in percentages and not in horsepower?

Because the same engine has a different factory output in different models. A percentage is correct for every version, an absolute figure only for one.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2?

With Stage 1 only the software in the engine computer changes. With Stage 2 you also open up the intake and exhaust, with hardware such as a freer intake and a downpipe, and the software adapts to match.

Do I have to run RON98 after a tune?

That depends on the engine. On the S58 the difference between RON95 and RON98 is big enough to matter. On the S55 the difference is smaller. Each guide states what it does on that engine.

Can you install it as well?

Yes. We work with bootmod3 daily in our workshop in Elburg and handle the whole job: DME unlock, licence, tune and the hardware alongside it if needed. After your order we will contact you to make an appointment.
